General Overview

What is the Church of Panagia Paramythia?

The Church of Panagia Paramythia (also known as the "Church of Consolation" or Vlach-Saray) is a historic Greek Orthodox church located in the Phanar (Fener) district of Istanbul. Built around 1578, it served as the administrative headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople during a pivotal era in the 16th century.

What does the name "Panagia Paramythia" mean?

The name "Panagia Paramythia" translates from Greek to "Holy Mother of Comfort" (or "Church of Consolation").

Why is the church also called "Vlach-Saray"?

It is known as Vlach-Saray (Palace of the Vlachs) because the land and church were donated to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Vlach princes of the Danubian Principalities, symbolizing the deep spiritual and geopolitical ties between Wallachia and the Patriarchate.

Patriarchal Era (1587–1597)

How did Panagia Paramythia become the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate?

In 1587, the previous Patriarchal seat at the Pammakaristos Church was converted into the Fethiye Mosque under Sultan Murad III. In response, the Vlach princes offered Panagia Paramythia to the Patriarchate to serve as its new administrative center.

How long did it serve as the Patriarchal headquarters?

Panagia Paramythia served as the official seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch for eleven years, from 1587 to 1597. Afterward, the seat moved briefly to St. Demetrius before settling permanently at the Cathedral of St. George in 1601.

The Great Synod of 1593 & Global Impact

What was the Great and Holy Synod of 1593?

Hosted within Panagia Paramythia, the Great and Holy Synod of 1593 was one of the most important ecclesiastical council gatherings of the post-Byzantine era. It produced landmark decrees that reshaped Eastern Christianity and global geopolitics.

What major decisions were decreed during the Synod of 1593?

The council enacted two defining historical decisions:

Elevation of Russian Church

Granted autocephaly to the Church of Russia and elevated Metropolitan Job of Moscow to Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (Fifth Patriarchate).

Calendar Decision

Formally rejected Pope Gregory XIII's new Gregorian calendar, upholding the Julian calendar for calculating Pascha (Easter).

Why Eastern and Western Churches celebrate Easter on different dates

Because the Synod of 1593 at Panagia Paramythia rejected the Gregorian calendar in favor of maintaining the ancient Julian calendar rule decreed at Nicaea, Eastern Orthodox and Western Christian churches continue to calculate the date of Easter differently.

Architecture & Timeline

What were the original architectural features of the church?

Completed around 1578, it began as a modest rectangular stone basilica coated in plaster, featuring marble slab flooring, a single eastern arched window, a gabled terracotta roof, and a wooden narthex and iconostasis. As the congregation grew, it was expanded into a three-aisle basilica with additional niches and arched windows.

What comprised the rest of the Vlach-Sarai complex?

At its peak, the site was a prominent complex consisting of the main church, three adjoining administrative and religious structures, and a notable iron bell tower added in 1833.

What happened to the physical structure of the church?

The church suffered severe fires and underwent major rebuilds in 1640 and 1729. Tragically, a devastating fire in 1974 completely destroyed the main building, and its 1833 iron bell tower was subsequently stripped for scrap metal.
